Doctor’s and Health Professionals Forum March 2020
On March 18th 2020 ICD Melbourne organised a large scale Doctors and professionals forum for Melbourne. This was the first forum of this scale attempted in Melbourne for quite a number of years (possibly 20). The Forum was designed to give the medical professional community a further tool in their arsenal to help them deal with potential alcoholics whilst developing their knowledge of AA as a whole.
Faced with the closure of most events in Melbourne due to the COVID-19 Virus the committee and volunteers pushed through and made this an outstanding event. Although the numbers weren’t as hoped the results were significant and amazing. Of special note was the individual member contributions monetary and physically it was humbling to be a part of.
We had to two main medical speakers (a member of AA and a friend of AA) and two AA speakers. after the speakers spoke there was a Q & A session. The whole thing was recorded and is available on the ICD web site: http://www.aainnercity.com/
The personal highlight for me was the CEO of a major Melbourne charity asking where he could donate to AA as he was completely taken back by our non-for-profit motivation to help for others. Of course, we couldn’t accept his contribution but he did buy some literature from the literature table supplied by the CSO Melbourne (12 step office Prahran). The literature on this table sold out.
Over 200 AA members helped hand out flyers, over 1000 doctors/councillors/psychiatrists were made aware of AA or the event. This was completely funded by the ICD contributing groups and GSR’s. 20 members contributed their time on the day and the sub-committee for the event met on 10 different occasions.
This was an amazing morning the structure of which was perfect. We move on from this and hope to make this a bi-annual event.
