Your groups’ primary purpose

“Each group has but one primary purpose – to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.”

Tradition 5

Are you looking for a way for your group to better fulfil it’s primary purpose? There are practical measures within a group. Some groups encourage members to avoid their mates straight after the meeting. How easy it is to gravitate towards a friend after the meeting to discuss the footy, or work, or your new home. Meanwhile there’s a newcomer, desperate for hope. It rings true that AA meetings aren’t social clubs. We are a fellowship of alcoholics in action.

Another way to carry the message is to join your district. Getting involved in district allows groups to engage in a coordinated effort to carry the message of AA. Being granted a new freedom and happiness through AA, we are compelled to help still suffering alcoholics to reinforce this personal freedom. Service is freedom. In a sense, service is a selfish endeavour, because the person serving experiences freedom. Nominate your GSR at your next group conscience. The GSR will be the conduit between your group, and the district. Once elected, the GSR can provide further service opportunities to other members of the group. It might be providing information on AA to a local community centre, or flyers to a doctor.

The coordinated effort of public information through a district enables us to better carry the message. We can better cover our bases. We can see what areas have been missed. Some suffering alcoholics have access to treatment, subsequently learning of AA through a rehab or detox. Some do not. Let’s do our part to help the still suffering alcoholic.

See you on the front line.

Report: North West Melbourne PHN Practice Managers’ Conference

On Thursday March 30, 2017, Inner City District members participated in the Northwest Melbourne Primary Health Network’s conference for medical practice managers at Melbourne’s’ Jasper Hotel. The conference included a small expo area with about a dozen stands, including AA’s. With at least 2 members to talk to attendees at any one time, we interacted with the vast majority of medical practice managers, 25 of whom provided details for future PI contact.

Attendees seemed very interested in learning more about AA – who we are and what we do. Some seemed to think we were employees of AA, and became quite curious to learn we were in fact alcoholics and members. Most conversations lasted for several minutes or more and led to much literature being taken, including A4 posters, business cards, information packs for potential members and postcards for professionals.

Thank you to all members who made the time to carry a positive AA message to a critical audience in our fellowship’s PI landscape.

Service Opportunity – CBD 30th March – Practice Managers Conference

We have secured an opportunity for Inner City District to have a stand at the North West Melbourne Primary Health Network’s Practice Managers Conference next Thursday March 30th.
Primary Health Networks are designed to support general practice in their geographical region.
The conference has a trade expo, which is where we will have our stand. We need just a few members to help out on the day. You don’t need to be available the whole day. Attendees will visit at morning tea, lunchtime and afternoon tea, so you can nominate your availability for either:
Morning Tea: 10:00 – 10:30am
Lunch: 12:30pm – 1:30pm
Afternoon Tea – 3:30pm – 4:00pm
It is being held at the Jasper Hotel, 489 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne.
This is a great opportunity to make contacts with Medical Practices in the region.
It’s also a good opportunity to invite a newcomer to observe and learn how to talk to professionals about AA!
If you can volunteer or know someone who can, please contact Lisa on 0415 970 190 or truegem72@gmail.com.
